Distribution and Transmission of Electricity

Electricity is transmitted across the country on the National Grid. This is a network of power stations, substations and pylons and underground cables.. Transmission involves the bulk transfer of electricity at the highest possible efficiency.

Efficiency is achieved by transmitting electricity at very high voltages. At higher voltages lower currents are required to be transmitted meaning there is less loss through heating. The cross sectional area of cables can also be much smaller.
